A national photographic survey undertaken by Angus Graham, Secretary of RCAHMS, between June 1940 and September 1943. Prompted by discussions with central government, Graham undertook to collect more than 2,000 photographs of c280 notable historic buildings (predating 1707) all over Scotland, in particular in areas deemed to be at risk from bombing raids. His equipment consisted of Sanderson (5x4) and Leica (35mm) cameras which he used, respectively, for general views and architectural detail. Larger buildings, such as Glasgow Cathedral, were photograped n great detail, while a smaller or less complex subject may have been recorded in only one view. The cameras, negatives, related notebooks and correspondance, all survive within the RCAHMS archive.
