Scope and Content Drum Castle, Aberdeenshire, view from north This photograph, taken around 1900, shows the castle from the north. The three major periods of building work at Drum are visible here: the medieval tower at the left, the Jacobean mansion at the rear and the Victorian entrance in the foreground. The tower-house is one of the oldest in Scotland, and has many defensive features, including thick walls with few windows, and high battlements. The castle is now open to the public, and visitors can explore all three parts of the building. The Upper Hall in the tower remains much as it was in the medieval period, with a high vaulted ceiling. Drum Castle is situated only 16km from the centre of Aberdeen. The castle has a long history, with some parts of the building dating from the 13th century. Until it was bequeathed to The National Trust for Scotland in 1976, Drum had been in the possession of the Irvine family since 1323. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
