Scope and Content Kitchen, Drum Castle, Aberdeenshire The kitchen now has modern fittings, including the range in the fireplace. All of the basement rooms have vaulted ceilings, including the long corridor that runs the entire length of the house. At the time this photograph was taken, in about 1950, the kitchen was still in use. Drum Castle was occupied by the Irvine family until 1976, so this kitchen was in use for over 350 years. Servants used to measure the Irvine children by standing them against the wide stone arch of the kitchen fireplace. The kitchen at Drum Castle is in the basement of a Jacobean mansion, constructed in 1619. Other parts of the castle include a medieval tower and substantial additions made during the Victorian period. The castle is open to the public during the summer months, as it is now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
