Scope and Content Dormer pediment on south façade, Drum Castle, Aberdeenshire This photograph shows a detail of the Jacobean part of the castle. The dormer window has an engraved pediment bearing the letters 'A I' and 'M D', the initials of Alexander Irvine (d.1630) and his wife Marion Douglas. The year 1619 is also carved within the pediment, indicating the year that the house was built. There are a number of dormers bearing the year of construction. One of these was inserted upside down, making it read '6191'. Drum Castle, situated about 16km south-west of Aberdeen, consists of three distinct parts, arranged around a courtyard. There is a medieval tower-house, dating from the late 13th or early 14th century, a Jacobean mansion, and a substantial Victorian addition. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
