Scope and Content Tower, Drum Castle, Aberdeenshire, from north-east The tower is seen here from the north-east, and it shows the rounded corners and high battlements which have survived from the medieval period. The window at first-floor level was added in the 19th century, when the lower hall was converted into a library. Where the arched window is now was once the entrance to the building, accessible only by a ladder. The walls of the tower measure up to 2.75m thick, making it defensively strong, especially in a time prior to the use of gunpowder. The vaulted room on the second floor remains much as it would have appeared during the medieval period, although the timber floor forming the upper sleeping area has been removed. The tower at Drum Castle is one of the oldest buildings of its type in Scotland. Dating from the late 13th century or early 14th century, the tower has survived as later buildings were attached to it. The castle is now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland, and is open to the public. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
