Scope and Content South-west corner turret, Fairburn Tower, near Muir of Ord, Highland Fairburn Tower, a simple tower-house, was built in the 1540s for Murdoch Mackenzie who had been granted the estate on condition he built a house there. The castle has only two corner turrets, one at the south-west corner (shown here), and one at the north-east corner. Tower-houses were popular with the wealthy gentry from the later Middle Ages until the 17th century. Though not strong enough to withstand a proper military assault with artillery, they provided security against raiders and attacks by rival factions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
