Scope and Content Drum Castle, Aberdeenshire, from west The castle is composed of three parts: the medieval tower, the top of which can be seen at the left of this photograph; a Jacobean mansion; and substantial Victorian additions. This photograph is centred on the Jacobean part of the castle. It was clearly not built to be defended, as there are lots of windows, even at ground level. Other features typical of Scottish architecture, such as crowstepped gables, dormer windows and corner turrets can all be observed on this building. The tower may have been built in the late 13th century or early 14th century. The Jacobean house was constructed around 1619, with the next substantial work occurring around 1875. Situated about 16km south-west of Aberdeen, Drum Castle is now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland. It was in possession of the Irvine family for over 650 years, until 1976.
