Scope and Content Castle Fraser, Aberdeenshire, from east This photograph, taken around 1942, shows one of the 'laigh biggins', which were wings added by Andrew Fraser in 1631 to hold the servants' quarters, brewhouse and bakehouse. The raised part of the wing, next to the round tower, contains the dining room and kitchen. At the time that this photograph was taken, the castle was in the ownership of Clive Pearson, who carried out some restoration work. In 1976, the castle was given by Pearson's daughter to The National Trust for Scotland, who completed the restoration work, and now open the castle to the public. Castle Fraser is situated 26km west of Aberdeen. A tower, known as Muchall-in-Mar, was first built in the 15th century by Thomas Fraser (d.1475), who had been granted the lands of Muchall and Stoneywood by King James II (1437-60). Later generations of the Fraser family made additions to the tower, which became known as Castle Fraser in 1695. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
