Scope and Content Claypotts Castle, Dundee, from north-east This view from the north-east, taken in the mid-20th century, shows the north-east round tower, and the east face of the central block, with the bulge of the secondary stair-tower in between. Note the absence of openings below the first floor, apart from gun loops, clear evidence of intent to resist attackers with small weapons. The Claypotts estate was sold in 1601 to Sir William Graham of Ballunie, and eventually passed to the famous James Graham of Claverhouse (known as Bonnie Dundee), loser at the Battle of Killiecrankie. The estate was then forfeited to the Crown, and transferred to the Douglas family, who gave the castle into State care in 1926. Now in the care of Historic Scotland, the castle is open to the public. Claypotts Castle was built on the estate of that name in the second half of the 16th century, generally ascribed to the period between 1569 and 1588. It was built by John Strachan, on a Z-plan, with diagonally-opposed round towers flanking a rectangular tower. This arrangement gives much more accommodation than a traditional tower-house.
