Scope and Content Upper part of main block, Castle Fraser, Aberdeenshire, from north This photograph shows the upper storeys of the main block of the castle. They were added in the early 17th century by Andrew Fraser (1574-1636). The carved panel (centre) bears the Fraser arms below the royal arms, and the date of 1618 is at the top. This panel was originally gilded and is a splendid example of this type of carving. The circular turrets, known as bartizans, add to the baronial appearance of the castle. Andrew Fraser was also responsible for building the 'laigh biggins', or 'low buildings'. These long wings, the roof and dormer windows of which can be seen at the lower left and right of the photograph, contained service quarters and formed a courtyard around the entrance of the castle, adding to its grand appearance. Castle Fraser, 26km west of Aberdeen, was first built in the 15th century. Over the centuries, generations of the Fraser family made additions, creating a Renaissance castle. The castle is now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland, and is open to the public. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
