Scope and Content Gun-loop, east side of stair-tower, Fairburn Tower, near Muir of Ord, Highland Fairburn Tower, a simple tower-house, was built in the 1540s for Murdoch Mackenzie who had been granted the estate on condition he built a house there. This gun-loop, one of many, pierces the east side of the stair-tower which was probably added in the early 17th century. It was would have been intended as much for display as for defence. Tower-houses were popular with the wealthy gentry from the later Middle Ages until the 17th century. Though not strong enough to withstand a proper military assault with artillery, they provided security against raiders and attacks by rival factions. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
