Scope and Content Huntly Castle, Aberdeenshire, from south-south-west This view from the south-south-west, taken in the mid-20th century, shows most of the south front of the main range, with the west tower on the left. The upper floors were remodelled in about 1600 by the 1st Marquess of Huntly. The inscription says 'George Gordoun First Marquis of Hv' and "Henriette Stevart Marquisse of Hv'. This castle was a stronghold of the Gordon family, who became Earls, then Marquesses of Huntly. The 1st Marquess visited the chateau of Blois in France in 1594, and this probably inspired him to add the decorative features to the top floor of the castle, seen here, and the entrance in the north-east corner. Huntly Castle is the successor to two earlier castles, the first of which was a motte-and-bailey timber and earth structure of the late 12th century. In about 1400 a stone castle was built on the bailey. The present structure was started in about 1450, remodelled in the 1550s, and again in the early 17th century.
