Scope and Content External door to round tower, Brechin Cathedral, Angus It is likely that this site has been occupied by a religious community since around 970 or earlier. The round tower, which was originally freestanding, and some sculptures in the present cathedral, are all that remain of an early monastery. The narrow entrance is 2.1m above the ground and a portable ladder would have been used to reach it. The arch is false, being hollowed from the underside of a long straight lintel. Each jamb (the sides of the opening) is made from a single stone. The inner and outer edges are decorated with small discs known as nailhead ornamentation. Above the door is a crucifixion in relief. There is a figure on each side of the door, each holding a staff, while below the door are two crouching beasts. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
