Scope and Content Drum Castle, Aberdeenshire, view from south This photograph, taken around 1900, shows the Jacobean mansion that was constructed alongside the late 13th or early 14th-century tower in 1619. Many of the distinctive features of Scottish architecture are visible on this building, including crowstepped gables, dormer windows and round turrets. This part of the castle, unlike the earlier tower, was not built with defence in mind, so has a more domestic appearance. During the Victorian period, a further portion was added at the northern side of the castle. This means that the castle is composed of three distinct parts, which all retain many original features. The castle is now open to the public. Drum Castle, situated about 16km south-east of Aberdeen, has been in the care of The National Trust for Scotland since 1976. Before this, the Irvine family had held Drum since 1323, when King Robert the Bruce bestowed Drum to William de Irwin (d.1335). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
