Scope and Content Yett and door to passage, Drum Castle, Aberdeenshire This photograph shows the iron yett inside the Jacobean part of the castle. Designed to protect the main door of the house, it is constructed of interlaced bars of wrought iron which cannot be forced in either direction. The yett dates from around 1619, when this part of the castle was constructed. The oldest part of the castle, a tower dating from the late 13th century, was built with defence in mind, with thick walls, narrow windows and high battlements. The Jacobean mansion, in contrast, has fewer defensive features. The yett was probably designed to repel robbers, rather than armies. Drum Castle, situated 16km south-east of Aberdeen, is now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland, and is open to the public. It comprises three separate parts, dating from the medieval, Jacobean and Victorian periods. The castle was in the possession of the Irvine family from 1323 until 1976, when it passed to the Trust.
