Scope and Content Courtyard entrance, Drum Castle, Aberdeenshire, from east This photograph shows the entrance into the courtyard in the west wall. It is situated directly opposite the tower, the oldest part of the castle. The arch and wall were probably built during a period of renovation work around 1875, but possibly reuse earlier stone. On passing through the arch into the castle's grounds, there is a 16th-century chapel and burial-ground to the left. The grounds also contain the Old Forest of Drum, a remnant of ancient woodland. Drum Castle is arranged around a courtyard, with distinct phases of building that date from the medieval, Jacobean and Victorian periods. Having been held by the Irvine family from 1323 until 1976, the castle is now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland, and is open to the public during the summer months.
