Scope and Content Castle Fraser, Aberdeenshire, from south-south-west This photograph was taken around 1942, and shows the south façade of the castle. It shows the castle prior to restoration work, and some of the external harling is crumbling. The oldest part of the castle is the lower part of the entrance block, with the square tower at the left and the large round tower being added around 1576 by Michael Fraser (d.1588), to form a Z-plan building. The upper storeys of the castle were added in the early 17th century by Andrew Fraser (1574-1636). The restoration of the castle removed all the harling from the central block, revealing the granite masonry. Some parts of the building, including the Michael and round towers, still have a covering of harling. Castle Fraser dates from the 15th century, when a tower was built on the lands of Muchall and Stoneywood. Known as Muchall-in-Mar, the castle was built by Thomas Fraser (d.1475), who had been granted the lands by James II (1437-60) in return for his loyalty. Substantial additions were made by later generations of lairds. In 1976, the castle was given to The National Trust for Scotland and it is open to the public. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
