Scope and Content This was likely prepared for Britton’s RIBA lecture delivered on the 12 January 1846. Britton draws attention to the natural scenery which surrounds the chapel and its proximity to Hawthornden Castle. On a separate sheet of paper pasted to the draft is an excerpt from an unidentified description of Hawthornden Glen and Roslyn Chapel, possibly by Thomas Pennant. Additionally, Britton presents the engraving of Rosslyn Chapel by Jospeh Mallord William Turner, published in Provincial Antiquities of Scotland, as “one of those pictures which fascinates with imagination and stimulates the curiosity” and references an image by Gandy of the chapel illuminated by light.
