Scope and Content The letter gives a detailed description of the condition and construction of the flat arches in the aisle of Rosslyn chapel, which is accompanied by three measured sketches by Kemp: fig.1. shows a section through a flat arch as shown from above, fig.2. shows a vertical section of a flat arch looking from north to south through the chapel, and fig.3. shows a section of a flat arch looking from east to west through the chapel. A note to the right of the drawings by J R Thompson, the curator of chapel, criticises Kemp’s description as erroneous. Pencil annotations by John Britton relate to Britton’s use of Kemp’s description of the flat arches in his 1846 RIBA lecture.
