All Other | PA 187 | Photograph Album No 187, (cf PAs 186 and 188) Rev. J.B. MacKenzie of Colonsay Albums, 1870, vol.2. Photograph album inscribed J B MacKenzie, Colonsay. This album was owned by Rev. J B Mackenzie, Minister of Colonsay 1861-72 and of Kenmore 1872-1911. The album contains some pages of large high quality photographs but the majority contain numerous small photographs of which many may be duplicates from previous albums. It certainly appears that this album contains the widest array of photographs and a great number of personal portraits, potentially including family portraits with J.B. Mackenzie himself. Like the other albums, it is thought that at one time this was in the possession of the Society of Antiquaries. Here too, though the vast majority of photographs are undated, they are most likely to have been taken around the late 1860s and early 1870s. The vast majority of photographs contained within this album are of individual portraits of a variety of unidentified figures and of varying sizes of group portraits including many family and friend groups and large groups of children – Oban Sunday School teachers and pupils at Crinan; Kenmore Sunday School, and boys’ bugle bands. Included are also images of various rock formations on Colonsay, and of the ruins, carved stones and late medieval grave slabs of Oronsay Priory. Of Kenmore there are pictures of the village, the surrounding Taymouth woods and fields, an image of Kenmore Pier and many varying sites on Loch Tay. There are also photographs of a variety of buildings including; Inishail Parish Church, some cottages from Colonsay and Kenmore, Inverlussa House, a number of unidentified Baronial mansions, and views of the Castles of Finchurn, Sween and Kilchurn. As always one also finds a number of photographs of Highland Cattle and other animals enjoying the countryside and beaches of Colonsay and Kenmore. | c. 1861 | Batch Level | |
