(NT 2157 6913) Colinton church was moved to its present position in 1626; in all probability there had been a burial ground there previously (W Lockhart 1883). It was rebuilt in 1771 and again in 1907 (H Scott 1915). On its SW angle is a tubular sundial bearing the date 1630 and the Foulis arms.

There is a fragment of a medieval grave-slab at the entrance to the church.

RCAHMS 1929, visited 1914

Colinton church is in use. The sundial and coat of arms are still to be seen but the medieval grave-slab has been removed.

Visited by OS (BS) 4 December 1975

Activities

Field Visit (10 July 1914)

Sundial and Fragment of Grave-slab, Colinton Parish Church.

This church, built in 1773 (1) and recently restored, has on its southwest angle a tabular dial on which the gnomon springs from an incised sun. Below the dial is a panel containing a shield charged with three laurel leaves, for Foulis, and flanked by the date 1630; the top of the dial is inscribed SIR JAMES FOULLES (2).

At the entrance to the church is a fragment of a medieval grave-slab, 2 feet 11 inches in present length, which tapers in width from 18 ½ inches at top to 15 ½ inches. The margin is defined by a bead, and within this is carved a shaft with a cross-head of four impinging penannular rings in relief within a recessed circular panel. On the sinister side of the shaft is a sword.

RCAHMS 1929, visited 10 July 1914.

Project (1997)

The Public Monuments and Sculpture Association (http://www.pmsa.org.uk/) set up a National Recording Project in 1997 with the aim of making a survey of public monuments and sculpture in Britain ranging from medieval monuments to the most contemporary works. Information from the Edinburgh project was added to the RCAHMS database in October 2010 and again in 2012.

The PMSA (Public Monuments and Sculpture Association) Edinburgh Sculpture Project has been supported by Eastern Photocolour, Edinburgh College of Art, the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust, Historic Scotland, the Hope Scott Trust, The Old Edinburgh Club, the Pilgrim Trust, the RCAHMS, and the Scottish Archive Network.

Field Visit (11 October 2001)

[Next to the horizontal gravestone (5th row) there is a further flat gravestone almost completely covered with moss. At the top there is the head and wings of an angel.

Along the wall from the gravestone with the oblong panel there is a vertical gravestone with a cherub with wings and underneath a skull.

Round the corner from this there is a vertical gravestone also with a cherub, skull and crossbones and a spade.]
