Scope and Content Gravestone, St Cuthbert's Churchyard, Colinton, Edinburgh St Cuthbert's Parish Church, surrounded on all four sides by its churchyard, stands in the elbow of the Water of Leith at Colinton village. The present building dates from 1908, but there has been a church on or near this site for over 900 years. This weathered headstone bears the date 1743. It has scrolled fern decoration at the sides, and a skull, the symbol of death, at the bottom, along with the words 'MEMENTO MORI'. At the top is the winged soul, the symbol of immortality. The oldest surviving inscription in the church is the grave-marker of Agnes Heriot, wife of John Foulis, who died in 1593. It reads: 'HEIR LYIS ANE HONORABIL VOMAN A HIRIOT SPOVS TO I FOVLIS OF COLLING TOVN VAS QVHA DIED AVGVST 1593'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
