Scope and Content Burial enclosures in St Cuthbert's Churchyard, Colinton, Edinburgh St Cuthbert's Parish Church, surrounded on all four sides by its churchyard, stands in the elbow of the Water of Leith at Colinton village. The present building dates from 1908, but there has been a church on or near this site for over 900 years. This line of stone burial enclosures, dating from the late 18th century, stands on the north side of the church, forming a boundary between the old graveyard and a later extension to the north. The iron gates were locked to prevent unauthorised entry. In the early 19th century, the lucrative trade of 'body snatching' was common in Edinburgh. Freshly buried corpses were dug up from graveyards and sold to the Anatomy Department at Edinburgh University to be used for dissection by medical students. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
