Architecture in detail: Animals in Design

04/10/2016

The 7th gallery in our Architecture in Detail series brings together images of animals in design from our collections.

Animal motifs have long appeared in stone carvings and are often used as decorative elements in churches and public buildings. The collections also illustrate a number of animal memorials and sculptures as well as quirkier animal design elements. The National Record of the Historic Environment at HES includes a wealth of material illustrating design across Scotland.

The collections can be consulted in our Search Room and through our online resources. This includes Canmore where new images and information are added every day through ongoing surveys of Scotland's built heritage, as well as through an active digitisation programme of negatives, prints and drawings.
