Scope and Content The gates of the former Falcon Hall, Morningside Road, Morningside, Edinburgh Falcon Hall, designed c.1814 by Thomas Hamilton for Alexander Falconar, stood on the east side of Morningside Road within the Canaan estate. The building incorporated Morningside Lodge, an impressive house built in 1780 for Lord Provost William Coulter. The tall stone gate piers, each surmounted by a stone falcon, stood immediately north of what is now No 195 Morningside Road. The elaborate wrought-iron gates also bear the image of a falcon. The gates and the house were demolished in 1909. The falcons may have been a play on the name, Falconar, or an idea taken from the Palazzo Falconieri (Falcon Palace), Rome which Falconar is said to have visited. They now stand at the entrance to the Royal Scottish Zoological Society, Corstorphine Road. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
