Scope and Content Painted dragon, Trophy Room, first floor, Balnagown Castle, near Milton of Kildary, Highland Balnagown Castle was built before 1490 as a tower-house. Extensions in 1593 and 1668-72 created an L-plan layout. Then, in 1763, Admiral Ross had a block built in the angle, so giving the castle its present rectangular ground-plan. The initials in the window arch above the dragon stand for Baron David Ross and his wife, Lady Anne Stewart, who is said to have been responsible for the late 17th-century alterations.
