Scope and Content The Foyers hydro-electric power scheme was originally built in 1896 for the British Aluminium Company and provided power for an aluminium smelting plant on the shores of Loch Ness. When this closed in 1967, the existing scheme was redeveloped. Water flows from nearby Loch Mohr through an underground tunnel to the power station at Loch Ness that can produce 300 MW of power. The Affric / Beauly hydro-electric power scheme is located in the western Highlands of Scotland. It is based around Glen Strathfarrar, Glen Cannich and Glen Affric, and Strathglass further downstream, and generates hydro-electric power for northerly parts of Scotland. It comprises six power stations: Deanie, Culligran, Aigas, Kilmorack, Fasnakyle and Mullardoch. These are fed by a system of lochs, waterfalls and dams, the main ones being Loch Mullardoch and Loch Monar. The Foyers scheme, meanwhile, is a small scheme fed by Loch Mhor. This collection of images documents the two schemes. It is one of a series recording the eight major hydro-electric schemes in Scotland.
