Scope and Content Modern-day photographs depicting the journey of the pretender to the throne Charles Edward Stuart (better known as Bonnie Prince Charlie) after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in April 1746. A fugitive in Scotland for six months, he was hounded by his foes and sheltered by his devoted Highland friends, managing to evade capture and escaping to France by boat in September of 1746. The dates appended to each image allow users to plot the journey of the Prince during the months that he was on the run from Government forces. The phrase "Charles in the Heather", incidentally, is taken from Eric Linklater's 1976 book "The Prince In the Heather".
