(NR 7670 5612) Tumulus (NR)

OS 6" map, (1925)

A number of urns were found in this small mound a few years before 1875 (Ordnance Survey Name Book [ONB] 1875). It is very heavily overgrown with shrubs, but appears natural (RCAHMS 1971).

A mutilated disc-headed cross stands on the summit of the mound. The only visible decoration on the opposite side of the stone is an incised line which may have formed part of a circle. (See also NR75NE 9)

Name Book 1875; RCAHMS 1971, visited 1961 and 1962.

Activities

Field Visit (May 1961)

Burials, Balinakill (Sites).

Immediately S. of the junction of the public road with the drive leading to Balinakill there is a small mound on which stands the stone cross (RCAHMS 1971) No. 260. The mound is very heavily overgrown with shrubs, but appears to be a natural feature. It is reported (Name Book No. 11, p.47) that a number of "urns" were found in it during the 19th century, but no further details are known.

RCAHMS 1971, visited May 1961.
