Activities

Test Pit Survey (19 September 2016 - 16 December 2016)

NH 7366 4598 A programme of archaeological work was carried out, 19 September – 16 December 2016, prior to development on the N edge of the designated Culloden Battlefield. Investigations consisted of a photographic survey of standing buildings, a metal detector survey and watching brief along 450m of new access track, and test pitting. The removal of topsoil from the route of the track revealed five natural or semi-natural features. The test pitting found no evidence of activity prior to modern farming. The poorly sorted nature of the topsoil suggested frequent disturbance, either by cultivation or by vehicle/animal traffic.

Watching Brief (9 July 2018 - 15 August 2018)

NH 73672 45983 A watching brief was carried out, 9 July – 15 August 2018, during the removal of topsoil for a small housing development. The site is within the Culloden Muir Battlefield Inventory Area and a previous evaluation, metal detector survey and building recording had been carried out. No features or finds of archaeological interest were identified, and the site had been very disturbed by the former farm and its activities.
