Date 31/5/2014

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 343206

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Viewhill Farm lies on the boundary of the designated area of Culoden Battlefield and is now being developed for houses (2020). No archaeology was discovered in pre-development evaluation. This farm for many years bred black horses, but latterly the farm buildings were abandoned and deteriorated. Culloden Wood runs across the centre of the photo and behind is the village of Balloch. The field behind the trees on the left is Chapelton, named for St. Mary's Chapel, though no remains can be seen. The Scottish School of Forestry is in the woodland and in the distance is the Kessock Bridge and the Beauly Firth. Very little of archaeological importance has been recorded in this area. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
