Built 1872-3 for the Howe Sewing Machine Company (architects A Kennedy, Son & Myles) at a cost of #15,000, the works occupies a triangular site and comprises the remains of a group of mostly polychrome brick buildings of varying height. Howe's suffered severe competition from Singer (in Clydebank), and diversified into bicycle manufacture. At the time of visit in 2001, the works were disused and to let.
