Scope and Content Howe Sewing Machine Works, No 48 Avenue Street, Glasgow This works was built in 1872-3 for the Howe Sewing Machine Co to designs by A Kennedy Sons & Myles, architects. The Howe sewing machine was a rival of the Singer, but could not compete with the latter. This shows the west end of the works, looking along Kirkpatrick Street. This is only a small part of the works, the main range of which was 74 bays long. On the left is part of the Bon Accord Engine Works, this part built in 1898 and 1900. In the 1880s, when the Howe sewing machine had succumbed to competition from Singer, the company turned to the manufacture of cycles, mainly tricycles and quadricycles, which they marketed in Europe. This market was killed by the motor car. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
