Scope and Content Howe Sewing Machine Works, No 48 Avenue Street, Bridgeton, Glasgow This works was built for the Howe Sewing Machine Co in 1871-3 to designs by A Kennedy, Son & Myles. It was one of the largest factories in Glasgow, and was designed for the mass production of sewing machines. This shows the factory from the north-east, with Fielden Street on the left and Avenue Street to the right. The main range, along Avenue Street, was 74 bays long. The factory occupied the whole of a triangular block. The Howe sewing machine proved less successful than its rival the Singer, which was also made for a time in the east end of Glasgow. The Howe company turned to cycle manufacture, but this too failed. The east range is stiil used for furniture making. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
