Scope and Content Howe Machine Works, 48 Avenue Street, Glasgow (Glasgow City council area) This building was constructed for the Howe Sewing Machine Co, to designs by A Kennedy, Son and Myles, and covered the whole of a large triangular site. It was much larger than the slightly earlier Singer works in James Street. This view shows the building from the west, with its very large chimney appearing above the main block. There were lower ranges to the rear of this enormous factory. The Singer sewing machine proved superior to the Howe, and by the 1880s the Howe company had taken to making bicycles, tricycles and quadricycles. The main building was demolished in 1969, but part of the rest survives making furniture. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
