St Rollox Chemical Works, 229 Castle St, founded 1799 by Tennant, Knox & Co, chemical manufacturers. A very extensive site, on both sides of the Garnkirk and Glasgow Rly. Latterly, the oldest building was the neat one storey, 6-bay office block, though there were much-altered remains of other early structures. There was a modern Petersen sulphuric acid plant, which was demolished in 1964-5 with the rest of the works. The only surviving part is on the N of the railway, a two-storey, 12- by 6-bay red and whote brick store at 11 Springburn Rd. At one time the works was renowned for 'Tennant's Stalk', a chimney 455.5ft [138.9m] tall, built 1841-2 and demolished in 1922.
