Scope and Content St Rollox Chemical Works, Nos 229-31 Castle Street, Glasgow This works was founded in 1799 by Tennant, Knox & Co, chemical manufacturers, to make bleaching powder, a compound of calcium and chlorine which when dissolved in water to make a bleaching liquor. Patented by Charles Tennant, it made the company the largest chemical makers in the world. This shows the Petersen sulphuric acid plant which was the last chemical manufacturing plant in the works, looking across the drained and culverted 'Cut of Junction' between the Forth & Clyde and Monkland Canals. The towers behind the brick shed were part of the process plant. Charles Tennant & Co Ltd were driving forces in the establishment in 1890 of the United Alkali Co Ltd, a defensive amalgamation of makers of soda by the Leblanc process. The combine ran down manufacture at St Rollox. What was left of the works closed in 1964 and was demolished in 1964-5. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
