Scope and Content St Rollox Chemical Works, Nos 229-31 Castle Street, Glasgow This works was founded in 1799 by Tennant, Knox & Co, chemical manufacturers, to make bleaching powder, a compound of calcium and chlorine which when dissolved in water to make a bleaching liquor. Patented by Charles Tennant, it made the company the largest chemical makers in the world. This shows the offices of the works, dating from the early 19th century. The pipe in front is being prepared to carry water from the Monkland Canal to the Forth & Clyde Canal, so that a new road system can be built over the site of the works and canal. Charles Tennant & Co Ltd were driving forces in the establishment in 1890 of the United Alkali Co Ltd, a defensive amalgamation of makers of soda by the Leblanc process. The combine ran down manufacture at St Rollox. What was left of the works closed in 1964 and was demolished in 1964-5. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
