Scope and Content St Rollox Chemical Works, Nos 229-31 Castle Street, Glasgow This works was founded in 1799 by Tennant, Knox & Co, chemical manufacturers, to make bleaching powder, a compound of calcium and chlorine which when dissolved in water to make a bleaching liquor. Patented by Charles Tennant, it made the company the largest chemical makers in the world. This shows a structure which was latterly used as a loading bay for sulphuric acid, but which was probably part of the substructure of a lead chamber, part of a process for making sulphuric acid which involved the interaction of sulphur dioxide with oxides of nitrogen in large lead boxes. Charles Tennant & Co Ltd were driving forces in the establishment in 1890 of the United Alkali Co Ltd, a defensive amalgamation of makers of soda by the Leblanc process. The combine ran down manufacture at St Rollox. What was left of the works closed in 1964 and was demolished in 1964-5. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
