Scope and Content Possible fragment of oar from Lochlea crannog, South Ayrshire The logboat (otherwise known as a 'dugout' or 'canoe') is a simple and 'primitive' boat, but this does not imply that it is necessarily early, most examples recovered being medieval or later in date. In 1878-9, excavation of a crannog yielded finds dated between later prehistory and modern times, including at least one 'large oar', part of which may be an object preserved in the Dick Institute, Kilmarnock.
