Glenfield, Kilmarnock, ard

SC 352859

Description Glenfield, Kilmarnock, ard

Catalogue Number SC 352859

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of DC 36094 PO

Scope and Content Ard-head from near the River Irvine at Glenfield, Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire The logboat (otherwise known as a 'dugout' or 'canoe') is a simple and 'primitive' boat, but this does not imply that it is necessarily early, most examples recovered being medieval or later in date. This object was discovered in 1914 during gravel-digging and is now held in the Dick Institute, Kilmarnock. Initially identified as a paddle, it has been reconsidered as an unworn example of an ard-head or similar cultivation implement. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
