Tentsmuir, paddle

SC 352862

Description Tentsmuir, paddle

Catalogue Number SC 352862

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of DC 36094 PO

Scope and Content Paddle from Tentsmuir Sands, Fife The logboat (otherwise known as a 'dugout' or 'canoe') is a simple and 'primitive' boat, but this does not imply that it is necessarily early, most examples recovered being medieval or later in date. Discovered in 1977, the paddle is now in Dundee Museum and Art Gallery. It was used for navigation, and the blade has a distinctive square form with a slight dorsal 'peak'.
