Scope and Content The medieval settlement of Tobermory was located on the high ground in the vicinity of St Mary's Chapel (open land on edge of built up area, by winding B882, in upper right sector of image). The harbourside settlement was founded 1788 by the British Fisheries Society, for whom Thomas Telford constructed the stone pier (near centre of image) in 1801-14. The pier in the foreground serves local ferry traffic. The wreck of a Spanish galleon lies in the Bay at left edge of image.
