Administrative History The SIAS was established in 1977 with the aim of carrying out systematic surveys of significant Scottish industrial monuments. Based in the University of Strathclyde, the survey was funded annually, initially by the Department of the Environment and from 1978 by the Scottish Development Department. Following a review in 1982, responsibility for funding was transferred to RCAHMS, and in 1985 the survey became an integral part of RCAHMS, continuing to produce detailed surveys of industrial monuments.
