Scope and Content Drying shed above kiln, Cruden Bay Brick & Tile Works, Aberdeenshire Established in 1902 by a Mr Cruikshank, the works were producing 12,000 bricks per day by 1906. Field drains were also made in 1906 when 32 men and boys were employed. In 1947 the works were extended and modernised and by 1960 five million bricks a year were being produced. The works closed in 1990. This shows the drying shed above the Hoffman kiln, a popular arrangement on the Continent, but Cruden Bay was the only works in Scotland to use this method. The heat radiated by the kiln heated the surrounding air which rose into the upper part of the structure and dried the bricks which rested on shelves or stools. This method provided slow and irregular drying which required little attention. It was more suitable for roofing tiles than bricks and in the damp British climate was not as economical as several other types of dryer unless an additional source of heat was used with adequate air circulation and some form of temperature control, such as the louvred windows along the right-hand wall in this photograph.
