Scope and Content Flue opening and ash pile, Avonbridge Brick Works, Falkirk The Avonbridge Brick Works in Avonbridge, Falkirk were established about 1952 by Afton Brick Co Ltd. They were operated for a time by the Caledonian Peat Co Ltd, and latterly by the London & Northern Group. The works were closed on 9 September 1977. This shows the flue opening and ash pile at the works. The flue is a channel used to convey hot gases from the kiln to the chimney and was most probably built of firebricks. The Hoffmann kiln to which it was connected could reach temperatures of 1,000-1,100ºC. Avonbridge was also known as Avon Brick Works. The machine wing consisted of a pan-mill (type unknown) to crush the raw materials, and two double Mitchell brick presses and mixers. The kiln itself was a 28-chambered Hoffmann, which was brick-built and barrel-arched. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
