Archaeology Notes

NX15NW 97 centred 1062 5818

Cropmarks have revealed what may be a pit-defined enclosure, together with at least two ring-ditches and a series of pits, to the SE of Soulseat Loch in a field some 400m to the NE of Mahaar steading (NX15NW 103). Subcircular on plan, the enclosure is defined by spaced pits and measures about 40m in diameter. It is plotted as a large ritual enclosure on a distribution map of Neolithic monuments covering southern Scotland.

Information from RCAHMS (ARG), 3 April 1998

RCAHMS 1997.

(Scheduled as ring-ditches under site-name Mahaar).

Information from Historic Scotland, scheduling document dated 5 October 1999.

Activities

Aerial Photographic Transcription (8 April 1994 - 6 June 1994)

An aerial transcription was produced from oblique aerial photographs. Information from Historic Environment Scotland (BM) 31 March 2017.

Aerial Photographic Transcription (29 November 2011)

Aerial Photographic Interpretation (24 June 2014)

Following a review of the aerial photographs, the pit enclosure recorded previously was not identified and has been removed as a classification. The cropmarks appear to be no more than a random scatter of pits.

Information from RCAHMS (KMM) 24 June 2014

Aerial Photographic Interpretation (January 2022)

A prehistoric round barrow has been recorded as a cropmark on oblique aerial photographs (RCAHMSAP 1992) 440m SE of Soulseat Loch and 400m NE of Mahaar steading (NX15NW 103). It comprises two concentric ring ditches, the inner measuring about 15m in overall diameter and the outer 29m, potentially indicating a two-phase barrow. It is also visible on visualisations of elevation models derived from Airborne Laser Scanning data (Scottish Public Sector LiDAR (Phase 3) 2015-16) as a low mound, some 17m in diameter. A number of pits of unknown function and purpose are situated immediately N of the barrow.

Information from HES Archaeological Survey (A. McCaig), January 2022.

Note (8 June 2022)

The location, classification and period of this site have been reviewed and changed from PIT(S) (PERIOD UNASSIGNED), RING DITCH(S) (PERIOD UNASSIGNED).
