Architecture Notes

Set on the eminence of Ben Bhragaidh some 360m above sea level to the NW of Golspie on the E coast of Sutherland, it was built in 1837 to commemorate the First Duke of Sutherland. Designed by William Burn in 1834, the rectangular pedestal is surmounted by an octagonal plinth and has coped upper surfaces. The inscription is contained in a panel in the SW face.

For more information, see William Burns' drawings SUD/78/1-2 in the NMRS.

The oversized statue was carved by Sir Frances Chantrey RA.

This site was recorded as part of the Listed Buildings Recording Programme (LBRP) for 2002-03.
