Archaeology Notes

NX07SE 7 0513 7405.

NX 0510 7406. A cairn 13.5m diameter and 0.7m max height, turf-covered but with stone protruding and with, exposed at a depth of about 0.6m, a short cist in which a food vessel was found during a partial excavation by S R C Symes, Belfast, about 1944. The cist had apparently been built in a natural hollow in the rock and an unusual feature is the cover, a 2m by 0.8m wide block of greywracke sharply arched both inside and out. The food vessel, a tripartite bowl, was donated to the NMAS by Lord Inchcape in 1946 (Acc No EE 138).
