Barnsness Lighthouse

(Flashing White) [NAT]

OS (GIS) AIB, May 2006.

(Location cited as NT 723 772). Barns Ness Lighthouse, established 1901, engineer D A Stevenson. A tall, slightly tapering; circular-section tower with circular lantern with triangular panes and domed top. The keepers' houses are, as usual, single-storey, flat-roofed structures, harled, with the quoins exposed.

J R Hume 1976.

At the time of the RCAHMS photographic survey, August 1998, the lighthouse compound included a Sundial, Flagpole, and Keepers' House. The lighthouse itself was painted a plain white without any red strips. The lintel over the door to the tower gives a date of 1901. The contacts at the time were a Mr and Mrs R Terry. This survey was carried out in order to enhance the existing holdings of the National Monuments Record of Scotland. There was also, at the time of the survey, a proposal to demolish the complex.

Visited by RCAHMS (MKO), August 1998.

This shore lighthouse was built by D A Stevenson, and first lit in 1901; its construction in an accessible location presented no special difficulties. It was machine-gunned from the air soon after the start of the Second World War.

In April 1966, the lighthouse was electrified with a sealed-beam system of up to 1,300,000 cp. This was the first installation of its type in the Northern Lighthouse service. It was automated in 1986.

R W Munro 1979; K Allardyce and E M Hood 1986; K Allardyce 1998; S Krauskopf 2001.

This lighthouse has been taken out of service, and made available for sale.
